Collaboration is the Key to OUr Success
SR2S partners, the Town of Los Gatos, Los Gatos Union School District, Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District, and Hillbrook school have a long history of collaboration in encouraging the use of alternative transportation to and from the schools in Town. Our combined efforts over the past decade have resulted in many successful projects that improve safety for our active community. The unique collaboration of committed leaders from a wide range of stakeholders sets us apart from other programs in the region. SR2S is indeed a Los Gatos grass-roots, community-driven organization. As such, our combined efforts have touched close to 30,000 students during that time focusing on the 6 E's of Safe Routes to School
Town of Los Gatos
The Town of Los Gatos works to bring innovative and updated infrastructure to the community to support walking and biking. The Traffic Study Around Schools provided much needed information regarding areas of improvement both on Town streets and on school campuses allowing for coordinated efforts of support. Innovative programs such as the School Bus Pilot, upgraded crosswalks and signals, and bike lanes throughout the community highlight a few of the successes. The upcoming installation of class IV bike lanes along Blossom Hill Road shows continued support for student walking and biking efforts. The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department’s on-going commitment to priority enforcement around schools and coordination of the crossing guard program sets SR2S apart from other organization in the County.
Los Gatos Union School District
The Los Gatos Union School District continues to be a leader in supporting SR2S. It is through the district that SR2S is able to provide age appropriate education to students on campus. Current education programming focuses on grades K-5. Kindergarten and 2nd Grade lessons focus on safe pedestrian skills and beginning "street awareness." Our popular bike rodeo events introduce bike commuting skills and safety in the 3rd and 4th grades. For older students, we encourage the use of active transportation as a way to build independence through messaging. To develop the next generation of leaders, SR2S trains middle school students to provide helmet safety and fitting to 3rd and 4th graders, supporting student-to-student outreach.
los GAtos High School
(Los gAtos-Saratoga union High School District)
LGHS supports SR2S outreach to help minimize traffic around the school site. Students receive outreach during Wildcat Days and throughout the school year. The school works to provide secure bike and skateboard storage on campus.
Hillbrook School
Hillbrook School, an independent k-8 school, continues to encourage the use of alternative transportation. Their school bus shuttles helped frame the School Bus Pilot in Town. They continue to advocate for carpooling along with walking and biking to school.
