A History of Community Collaboration
In the fall of 2006, a group of parents and school administrators at our local schools along with representation from the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department, formed a Safe Routes to School group to encourage students to use active transportation to and from school. The focus was to reduce traffic around the school and encourage healthy habits. This small group of individuals got to work implementing programs focusing on changing how families traveled to and from school. Some of our accomplishments include support for improved sidewalks, green bike lanes, additional bike racks and education programs aimed to improve safety and encourage active transportation. In 2016 that group formed into the nonprofit Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Safe Routes to School to continue to provide education and encouragement efforts to 8 schools in the Town of Los Gatos and the city of Monte Sereno.
Our Mission
The mission of Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Safe Routes to Schools (LG-MS SR2S) is to be a catalyst for change in education programs, enforcement, and infrastructure projects that encourage increased use of alternative transportation methods, thereby reducing vehicular traffic and improving commute safety for bicyclists and pedestrians, and instilling lifelong healthy habits in students
Our Vision
We envision a collaborative community that supports all students using alternative transportation to and from school in Los Gatos and Monte Sereno creating a healthier and more livable environment.
Board of Directors
SR2S is built on community collaboration. We are lead by a group of experienced community leaders and active members of the Los Gatos and Monte Sereno communities. The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department provides an advisory role in leadership, enforcement and education.
